If you are having trouble viewing the temperature, or are not even able to view the lat / lon coordinates, there are a few steps to take to determine where the problem is.

A few general considerations – The temperature reading does not appear on the chlorophyll charts, or when you are using the loop tool. It is only when you are viewing a specific SST chart. The temperature shows only when you move the cursor over an area of the chart with color, it doesn’t show when the cursor is over land, clouds cover, coastline, or the gridlines.

When you select a chart to view, there are two options

Option 1: Click on the specific Image Date/Time link. This loads the chart WITHOUT using the java applet, and you should be able to see the lat / lon coordinates in the field at the bottom of your screen as you move the mouse around on the chart. The temperature will display in this field when you STOP moving the mouse, assuming the cursor is on a spot with some temperature data (not on white areas or grid lines).

Option 2: Click on the “Java Version” link in the same line instead of the date. When you select “Java Version”, this calls up the chart page using the java applet. In this case you should be able to view the Lat / Lon coordinates and the temperature as you move the mouse around. This is a good way to view the charts as long as your computer has no problems running the java applet. If you experience problems with java, your best bet is to use Option 1.

If you have trouble running the java version and you still want to try it, in most cases you just need to update to the latest version of java. This is a free download and is normally a simple process on the Sun Java website, here is the link to verify your installation and to get the latest update installed:

Click on the blue button that says “Free Java Download” to begin the process. If you need a newer version this should guide you through the update.
